Backup Exec by Symantec is a robust software solution that stores enterprise files across a network. The software has a graphical user interface that allows administrators to easily restore files that are corrupted or accidentally deleted. Using Backup Exec to restore files takes only a few steps. Restoring from Backup Exec means you have already performed a backup and have stored files on the desired media. Backup Exec automatically backs up files and directories configured in the program. This example assumes that you have the software installed and have already performed regular backups.

     Insert the media used for backup. This media is the same disk or tape drive that has the stored backup files. If you use a tape backup, insert it into the drive. Backup Exec also allows you to use a hard drive, so this step can be skipped if the media you use is not portable.

     Click the Windows "Start" button, select "Programs" and choose "Symantec Backup Exec." This opens the user interface to restore files.

     Click the "Devices" tab. This expands a tree with a list of devices on the network configured to use Backup Exec.

     Right-click the media where the files are stored and select "Inventory" from the menu.

     Right-click the media in the right side of the window that lists details. Select "Catalog" from the menu. This loads the catalog of files and folders.

     Right-click the catalog to view files and folders stored from that date and select "Restore." This opens a new window that lists stored files and folders grouped by date.

     Click the date of the files to restore. This expands a tree that shows the list of files and folders.

     Click the files and folders to restore and click the "Run Now" button. This restores the files selected to the location from which they were backed up.
